Subject: 2-element beam info needed
Someone recently gave me a very old and partially DISassembled
2-element beam and said it was supposed to be a three-band beam.
A knowledgeable ham friend said he thought it was made by SWAN.
Does anyone have any specifications or instructions on how to
re-assemble AND TUNE any SWAN 2-element 20-15-10-meter beam.
I need help!

Subject: 2M HT's and Aviation Headsets
As a new ham (actually returning after a 25 year haitus) I am about to
buy some equipment. First on the agenda is a 2M HT. I've narrowed my scope
to two Yaesu units the FT-411 and the FT-470. I'm favoring the 470 because
of the dual band capability but there was a posting on this group some time
ago about microphonics especially, as I recall, when operating cross-band.
I haven't seen any more discussion of this and I would be interested in
further information from the original poster or others who have good/bad
experiences with either of these units.
My second inquiry regards the use of aviation headsets with a 2M HT.
There is a problem with impedance match between the HT output (nominally
8 ohms) and the headphone (150 - 600 ohms). The HT specs. a 2000 ohm mic.
and the DC m-4 electret works from 220 to 2200 ohms and also requires a DC
supply voltage of 8 to 16 volts. I haven't found anything in the Yaesu
specs. about supplying a DC bias for the mic. Has anyone made this con-
nection already? I am interested in a small, simple and robust interface.
I can wind my own transformer if I have to but that's not very efficient
and I would like to avoid the use of a battery if possible.
Please E-mail responses to georgep@tekirl.LABS.TEK.COM and I will
post a summary to the group if there is enough interest.
Thanks,
George

Subject: A mobile vhf kilowatt
Greetings,
Since I have moved into a condo, I have been thinking about running a kilowatt
out of my van........ some problems I have thought of are:
o the power source - perhaps 5 or 6 car batteries connected in series.
o bypass the ac input to the amplifier.
o protective inclosure for the batteries and amplifier.
o mounting hf and vhf transceivers - perhaps vertically.
That enough for a start....... comments please!

I have a rather yellowed and crumbling "Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary"
Copyright (c) 1956 by G. & C. Merriam Co., which has on page 78, right-hand
column, about 8th entry from the bottom,
beg'ohm (...), n. Elec. A unit of resistance equal to one billion ohms, or
one thousand megohms.
that's one I never heard about in school... interesting.

Subject: Mexico operating
I was in Mexico last year as the skipper of a sailboat which was
equipped with ham radio. The procedure for getting a Mexican ham
license is as follows:
1) get your mexican tourist card. (necessary for travel in Mexico)
2) Make a copy of your US ham license.
3) Get a letter of sponsorship from a Mexican ham.
4) Take all of the above to the SCT office in a state capital.
(SCT = Secretary of Communications and Transportation)
The SCT controls Radio, TV and Bus service.
If you are going to Baja, the state capitals are Mexicali for
Baja California Norte, and LaPaz for Baja California Sur. If
you go anywhere else besides a capital you will not be able to
get your license the same day as the paperwork must be sent to
the state capital.
5) The SCT will give you a form to take to the Hacienda (the people who
take your money) where the fee will be collected. $25-$35 depending
on where you go. The Hacienda will stamp the form which then must be
taken back to the SCT office. The SCT will issue you a callsign on the
spot. They look up available callsigns on greenbar computer printouts
and scratch off the one that they assign to you. There seems to be a pool
of callsigns assigned to each state.
P.S. The Hacienda collects money for all government agencies, and they are never
located near the agency that you are going to which requires a taxi ride. Taxis
are regulated by the SCT also.
When I went to get my license I did not have a letter from a Mexican ham, the
gentleman in the SCT office told that he would issue me a license this time
without the letter but that I should have it with me when I came back for
renewal. The license is good for the duration of you tourist card. This is
usually six months but I heard that they would issue two year tourist cards
for transiting yachtsmen.
Good Luck!

Re: Amateur Spooks
As a former military officer, I've heard the radios on both sides of
the encryption equipment. If it isn't encrypted, it isn't very interesting
as a national security matter. It might only be news. (Emergency
freqs are particularly interesting.)
(" Denver Center, United XXX with you at 18 thousand. "
< pause>
"Ooops" )
I enjoy listening to Police, Fire, military etc.
Besides, how else are you going to know how badly screwed up the News
Media get the stories :-)
Given the Communications Privacy Act of 1934, there is a long established
tradition which allows this. It might even be useful in terms of understanding
what the military is *really* doing ........
