  20. Someone recently gave me a very old and partially DISassembled
  21. 2-element beam and said it was supposed to be a three-band beam.

  23. A knowledgeable ham friend said he thought it was made by SWAN.
  24.  
  25. Does anyone have any specifications or instructions on how to
  26. re-assemble AND TUNE any SWAN 2-element 20-15-10-meter beam.

  42.      As a new ham (actually returning after a 25 year haitus) I am about to
  43. buy some equipment.  First on the agenda is a 2M HT.  I've narrowed my scope
  44. to two Yaesu units the FT-411 and the FT-470.  I'm favoring the 470 because
  45. of the dual band capability but there was a posting on this group some time
  46. ago about microphonics especially, as I recall, when operating cross-band.
  47. I haven't seen any more discussion of this and I would be interested in
  48. further information from the original poster or others who have good/bad
  49. experiences with either of these units.

  51.      My second inquiry regards the use of aviation headsets with a 2M HT.
  52. There is a problem with impedance match between the HT output (nominally
  53. 8 ohms) and the headphone (150 - 600 ohms).  The HT specs. a 2000 ohm mic.
  54. and the DC m-4 electret works from 220 to 2200 ohms and also requires a DC
  55. supply voltage of 8 to 16 volts.  I haven't found anything in the Yaesu
  56. specs. about supplying a DC bias for the mic.  Has anyone made this con-
  57. nection already?  I am interested in a small, simple and robust interface.
  58. I can wind my own transformer if I have to but that's not very efficient
  59. and I would like to avoid the use of a battery if possible.

  93. Since I have moved into a condo, I have been thinking about running a kilowatt
  94. out of my van........ some problems I have thought of are:

  96. o  the power source - perhaps 5 or 6 car batteries connected in series.

  98. o  bypass the ac input to the amplifier.

  100. o  protective inclosure for the batteries and amplifier.

  102. o  mounting hf and vhf transceivers - perhaps vertically.

  155. I was in Mexico last year as the skipper of a sailboat which was
  156. equipped with ham radio. The procedure for getting a Mexican ham
  157. license is as follows:
  158.  
  159. 1) get your mexican tourist card. (necessary for travel in Mexico)
  160. 2) Make a copy of your US ham license.
  161. 3) Get a letter of sponsorship from a Mexican ham.
  162. 4) Take all of the above to the SCT office in a state capital.
  163.    (SCT = Secretary of Communications and Transportation)
  164.    The SCT controls Radio, TV and Bus service.
  165.    If you are going to Baja, the state capitals are Mexicali for 
  166.    Baja California Norte, and LaPaz for Baja California Sur. If 
  167.    you go anywhere else besides a capital you will not be able to
  168.    get your license the same day as the paperwork must be sent to
  169.    the state capital. 
  170. 5) The SCT will give you a form to take to the Hacienda (the people who
  171.    take your money) where the fee will be collected. $25-$35 depending
  172.    on where you go. The Hacienda will stamp the form which then must be
  173.    taken back to the SCT office. The SCT will issue you a callsign on the
  174.    spot. They look up available callsigns on greenbar computer printouts
  175.    and scratch off the one that they assign to you. There seems to be a pool
  176.    of callsigns assigned to each state.

  178. P.S. The Hacienda collects money for all government agencies, and they are never
  179. located near the agency that you are going to which requires a taxi ride. Taxis
  180. are regulated by the SCT also.
  181. When I went to get my license I did not have a letter from a Mexican ham, the
  182. gentleman in the SCT office told that he would issue me a license this time
  183. without the letter but that I should have it with me when I came back for
  184. renewal. The license is good for the duration of you tourist card. This is
  185. usually six months but I heard that they would issue two year tourist cards
  186. for transiting yachtsmen.

  201. As a former military officer, I've heard the radios on both sides of
  202. the encryption equipment. If it isn't encrypted, it isn't very interesting
  203. as a national security matter. It might only be news. (Emergency
  204. freqs are particularly interesting.)

  214. Given the Communications Privacy Act of 1934, there is a long established
  215. tradition which allows this. It might even be useful in terms of understanding
  216. what the military is *really* doing ........
